US National Amateur Championships 2024

Provo, UT

We will be providing result breakdowns each day for the National Championships in all divisions.

New Ballroom Champions for the USA!

Last night in Provo new Amateur Ballroom Champions were crowned and they are Andrei Cutashevskii & Anna Vasina from Arizona.

Last year’s champions, also from Arizona, have moved to the professional ranks so the title was open. Andrei & Anna, won all 5 dances and had the majority of first places in all.  They were presented with the Irina Suvorov Perpetual Trophy. Andrei & Anna are only 21 and they headed an extremely youthful final in this adult division, with two other couples actually under 18.

Samuel Hacke & Katarina Hermanova (NJ) were the runners up, 2,3,2,2. Their best scored dance was foxtrot where they had 6 first places compared to Andrei & Anna’s 8. In 2 dances they had to rely on “3rd or better” scores to attain their 2nd place. Placing 2nd in tango and 3rd in the other dances, were Bohdan Aleksieiev & Michelle Yiu (PA). This is a new partnership and they really impressed us with their musicality. 6,5,4,4,4 gave Nathan Zaytsev & Alice Bankova (CA) 4th place overall in this final. They were also the winners of the Youth and U/21 Titles. Denys Savytskyy & Mila Kovalova (AZ) were 5th overall scoring 5,4,5,5,5 and Roman Shchochka & Marta Tyutyunnyk were 6th 4,6,6,6,6 – they were the runners-up in the Youth and U/21 titles.

The overall standard of the ballroom championship was outstanding from beginning to end.

Another headline event of this Saturday night was the Junior 2 Latin Championship. We felt that the overall level of the dancers was somewhat even making from some mixed results.

Winning all 5 dances, however, were Kirill Zakirzyanov & Fiona Bye (UT). This small couple has personality plus and had vociferous support from the local audience. Their best round was the final for sure. They won only rumba and jive with the majority of 1st places. Utah also took 2nd place in Crew Brinkerhoff & Kamri Peterson who were 2nd in all 5 dances. Arthur Groysman & Abigail Palatnikova (PA) were 3rd 4,5,3,3,3. This young man is a bundle of rhythm and energy and for us they were always a top 3 contenders. Eli Noudelman & Adela Yanev (WA) took 4th 3,3,4,5,4; 5th Leo Kolmykov & Solomiia Tsekit (NJ) 5,4,5,4,5; 6th Matthew Kotlyar & Katherine Nazarenko (NJ) 6,7,6,6,6; 7th Tymur Novytskyi & Alena Moriakova (CA) 7,6,7,7,7.

A crowd favorite every Saturday night in Provo in the US National Amateur Cabaret Championship. This year there was an original entry of 15 couples with 7 returned for the final. The semifinal was danced earlier in the week.

Sawyer Stolle & Katey Stolle (UT) did a beautiful job to win the event, taking 8 of the 11 first place marks with their “classic” cabaret style. The runners-up were the only couple to stray from the classic style and they presented a comedy routine portraying the Minions. This was Adrian Secchia & Gabrielle Smith (WA) We enjoyed it immensely and so did enough of the judges – although they had to rely on “3rd or better” scores to take second. Third spot went to Logan R. Barnes & Serena Keck (UT). They lost the 2nd place by 5 “3rd or better” scores to 7. 4th Kyle McOmber & Laura Stirland (UT); 5th Randon Butler & Rebekah Lattin (UT); 6th Isaac Hassel & Sarah Hassel (ID); 7th Garret Lloyd & Kayla Wong (UT). A noteworthy point came in the routine of the Hassels when Sarah actually lifted her partner overhead!

Chernositov/Grishanina Easily retain US Title for 2024

In front of a hugely supportive home crowd, Alexander Chernositov & Arina Grishanina romped to an easy victory in last night’s US National Amateur Latin Championship in the Marriott Arena.

The 15-panel of adjudicators saw fit to award them 72 of the available 75 first place marks, leaving the contest for the remaining finalist positions wide open, especially because a couple of the nation’s highest ranking competitors were missing.

It was especially notable that no couple received a majority of “2nd or better” scores except Bumchin Tegshjargal & Michelle Klets (CA) in the samba with 8. Bumchin & Michelle also went on to take the runner-up spot placing 2,2,2,2,3 overall.

The remaining placements were remarkably varied for a National Championship, but we felt that it was indeed a true reflection of the couples’ performances on the night – each couple had strong and weak dances. 3rd fell to Vadym Pidhoretskyy & Ruby Castro (FL) with scores of 5,4,3,3,4. Perhaps the couple that caused the adjudicators the most perplexity placed 4th and this was Oleg Zugan & Michelle Itkin (CA) whose overall placements were 6,3,4,6,2. Dave Firestein & Kennedy Eaton (NJ) were 5th 3,5,5,4,5 and Mykyta Vasylenko & Lyndsey Vasylenko (MA) were 6th 4,6,6,5,6.

This was an exciting final, made especially so by the uncertainty of ultimate positioning. Also worthy of note was that every semifinalist received marks into the final. Denys Chekunov & Naomi Spektor came the closest with 34 total marks (47 marks was the pass into the final).

We also saw a convincing winner in the other headline event of the night, the US National J2 Ballroom Championship. Leo Kolmykov & Dasha Andreyev (NJ) won all dances with clear majorities of 1st places and from where we sat, the result never really looked in question. One of a trio of couples from Utah in this final placed 2nd and this was Camden Cutler & Lexus Smith who scored 3,4,2,2,2. Worth noting is that no couple received a majority of “2nd or better” scores in any dance. Roman Netsvetaev & Yaroslava Gerasimova (IL) were 3rd 2,3,4,3,3. 4th Alex Shvartsman & Goldie Boyarskiy (IL) 4,2,3,4,5; 5th Logan Fisher & Kai Chantry (UT) 6,5T,5,6,4; 6th Leo Liu & Nicky Lin (WA) 5,5T,7,7,6; 7th Yegor Zhukov & Adyson Cherkas (CA) 7,7,6,5,7.
