The USA’s Longest Running Competition

Running for over 70 years, the Harvest Moon Ball, now the Chicago Harvest Moon Ball, is the USA’s longest running dance competition.

For 13 years under the direction of Peter Minkov & Yulia Kornilova, Harvest Moon continues to attract dancers from the Midwest and all over the USA.

Saturday night was mostly about the pro divisions and we felt that the American Style divisions offered the most interest. The Open Rhythm was a great contest at the top of the final. Clear winners by the judges’ scores were Gene & Elena Bersten who won 4 dances and placed 2nd in the mambo. They had the majority of 1st places in the 4 dances they won with the swing their best-marked dance with 12 out of 13 firsts. Although their win was expected, we did feel that the 2 couples that finished directly below them did present a strong challenge. The winners of the mambo were Roger Romero & Arismel Naya and they were 2nd overall placing 2,2,2,3,1. This couple has been competing a lot lately and we really like their “Latin” flavor. Mambo is certainly their strongest dance, but we felt the other 4 dances are also becoming stronger. 3rd spot went to another promising new partnership, Silviu Turcan & Yulia Nam, and they scored 3,3,3,2,3 overall. We felt these 3 couples were clearly at the top of the final. 9-Dancers, Joseph Lettig & Madalina Varlam Lettig, also turned in a strong performance in the Rhythm that we generally feel is their weaker style. They were 4th in all dances. Slava Polubnev & Kristin Polubneva were 5th in all, Luis Grijalva & Karina Vargas, 6th in all and Cedric Eaton & Mallory Fuhrmann were 7th.

The Open Smooth was the only division to begin with a semifinal. In this style the winners were very clear. Volodymyr Barabash & Yulia Rudenco received 51 of a possible 52 first place marks. (They received one 2nd in VW from judge, Keith Todd). Pavel Lebedev & Ekaterina Romashkina were also pretty clear in the runner-up position in all dances and did receive that one first place. They were pushed quite hard by Joseph Lettig & Madalina Varlam Lettig who took third in all dances and did take some second places in all dances. 4th were David Elser & Elizabeth Krug 4,4,5,4; 5th Patrick Stone & Carlye Stone 5,5,4,5; 6th Jonathan Wolfgram & Danyelle Morley 6,6,6,6.

For us the Pro Latin was the hardest division to call as the couples were somewhat even in performance. Dmitrii Chopenko & Valeria Khrapak were the winners 1,1,1,2,1 and they did have the majority of first places in the 4 dances they won. We definitely felt Valeria was the best lady dancer on the floor. The winners of the paso doble were the runners-up overall and they were Mishiko Bregvadze & Alena Khoroshevtseva 2,2,2,1,2. 3rd and 4th positions were very close with the decision going to Vlad Astafiev & Elizabeth Zymovets by 3 dances to 2 – 3,4,4,3,3 – over Nazar Zakharchenko & Anastasiia Rozdabara 4,3,3,4,4.

The end of Saturday night was the turn of Latin stars Andrey Kazlouski & Nino Dzedneladze to wow the large audience with their interpretations of the five Latin dances in show mode.

Sunday was given over to the junior divisions and the entries were high in quantity and quality.

Congrats to Peter & Yulia for keeping the grand tradition of the Harvest Moon Ball alive and well!
